ULTRASONIC TRANSDUCERS FOR
MEDICAL APPLICATIONS
AFC/O/F-2003/05
Abstract
A
French SME has developed specialised know-how and original technological
processes based on the concept of piezoelectric composites with a ceramic
polymer structure for the production of ultrasonic probes. The company is
able to develop high performance and innovative solutions for a wide range
of medical applications like medical diagnosis, medical monitoring, medical
therapy. It proposes manufacturing and marketing agreements with technical
assistance to medical instrumentation manufacturers.
Description
This French SME has built an expertise in the design and manufacture of
ultrasonic probes and transducers for applications in medicine, industry and
environment.
It has developed new ultrasonic transducers based on the concept of
piezoelectric composites, for medical applications like medical diagnosis,
medical monitoring and medical therapy.
They can be used for :
- imaging: abdominal, cardiac, vascular and peripheral imaging or
experimental applications: harmonic imaging, vibroacoustic imaging,
thermo-acoustic imaging.
- biometry: eye biometry, blood flow measurement, bone densitometry, dental
applications
- therapy: ablathermy, destruction of stones, biological activation,
activation of drugs, etc.
The piezoelectric composite technology with a ceramic-polymer structure (1-3
composite structure) allows a high level of performances, in a frequency
range from 200 kHz to more than 20 MHz.
The company proposes high performance and innovative solutions with a great
flexibility :
- wide range of array transducers (1D, 1.5D, 2D,...)
- large range of active surface shaping for direct beam steering or focusing
- miniaturised or special design probes
- probes withstanding severe using conditions
Innovative Aspects:
The innovative aspects for these probes are provided by the physical
properties of piezo-electric composite elements which are :
- accurate beams (direct focusing through high precision shaping of
transducer elements)
- high sensitivity
- axial resolution
- reliability (stability and precision of the transducers of the
performances, mechanical and thermal resistance)
Main Advantages:
These probes offer :
- acoustic impedance matching to liquids and human tissues,
- withstanding use and cleaning conditions
- efficiency and precision of the transducers higher than conventional
probes
