Oxygen sensor operating at low temperature

ABOL/O/F/2004-002

Abstract

A French university laboratory has developed an oxygen sensor able to measure oxygen partial pressure at low temperature (200-500°C). This technology could be applied for laboratory devices, industry, automotive industry (catalytic converter), etc.The laboratory is looking for manufacturers, industrial companies interested in a technical cooperation and willing to benefit from the know-how background.

Description

This French laboratory has more than twenty years experience in the field of nano size grain elaboration and research on their reactivity and physical properties. Good knowledge of fine grain thermodynamic has allowed them to develop a new oxygen sensor.

At the moment, there is no oxygen sensor in the market able to measure oxygen partial pressure in the low temperature range (200-500°C). The best existing oxygen sensor is made in zirconia working at the minimal temperature of 500°C. Main application concerns catalysis (e.g. industry, automotive industry, etc.)

However the oxygen vacancy mobility – too low below about 500°C –forbids the use of this sensor below this temperature. The offered sensor technology can be used at lower temperature.

At low temperature, the sensor material (for example nanometric titanium ferrite) reacts with oxygen and shows a conductivity phenomenon sensitive enough to pO2 variations in this range of low temperature. It is then possible using conductivity measurement to get oxygen partial pressure.

Innovative Aspects
This oxygen sensor is able to measure oxygen partial pressure at low temperature (200-500°C).

Main Advantages
The sensor response is almost instantaneous, as fast as flow rate.
