Low-cost optical telemeter (or
range-finder)
05 FR GEFC 0BPY
Abstract
A French laboratory, CNRS-associated, has patented a new lost-cost optical
telemetric system for measuring distances. The technology is based on
time-of-flight and is using a CW laser diode emitting at 1,55 µm. Simpler
than classical systems, it can be used for various applications like devices
for geometers, anti-collision devices, systems for guiding robots. The
laboratory is looking for license agreement with an industrial partner able
to design and manufacture the product.
Description
A French
optical laboratory has patented a new and low-cost optical telemetric system
based on time-of-flight and using a low-frequency (10-100 kHz) modulated
laser diode emitting at 1.55 µm. Compared to classical telemeters, which are
very complex and require sophisticated electronic systems, this one uses
only standard components already developed for the telecommunication
industry. The signal processing is simplified. This system can be easily
adapted to the microwave field or to acoustics: so it can be used in various
atmospheric conditions or in aquatic environment.
Allowing distance measurements from 1m to 200 m with an accuracy of 2/1000,
this telemeter could be used for various applications like:
- Short distance measuring devices: white cane for blind people, optical
meter (tools)
- Devices for geometers (specific tools)
- Anti-collision devices (armament, aeronautics, automotive, transport,
etc.)
- Guiding and vision devices for robots, distance measurement for table on
machine-tools (industrial processes, robotics, machine-tools)
- Telemeters for shooting and for guiding missiles (armament, weapons
industry)
The device is still experimental and the laboratory is looking for
cooperation with industry. The partner sought should be able to develop a
prototype and to be in charge with industrialisation and to manufacture the
device. The laboratory is able to make further R&D for the industrial
partner if necessary.
Innovative Aspects:
- Use of CW (continuous wave) laser diode
- Use of modulation by low frequency (less than 100 kHz)
- Direct modulation of the forward current of the laser diode without
degrading its performance
Main Advantages:
- Simplicity with good relative accuracy
- Low-cost system: standard components, analogical measurement, simple
signal processing
- Independence of the source spectrum profile and bandwidth
- Easily adapted to microwave field or acoustics
